Second International Committee Meeting for the 5th WSFM

Manila, Philippines, 12-13 April 2012

Following the first meeting of the International Committee (IC) in Geneva, the second was held in Manila with the Philippine Working Group (PWG) of the World Social Forum on Migration. The meeting was held in Miriam College on 12-13 April 2012. Present in the Manila meeting were: William Gois (Migrant Forum in Asia), Jose Luis Gutierrez (National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities) and Salah Salah (Palestinian National Council). Other IC members who were unable to attend the face-to-face meeting were able to join via Skpe: Paulo Illes and Patricia Gainza (Espacio Sin Fronteras), Anaite Vargaz (ALER), and Manuel Hidalgo (Miredes International).

First International Committee Meeting for the 5th WSFM

The 1st International Committee (IC) meeting on the World Social Forum on Migration (WSFM) started off with Oscar Chacon of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC) gave an overview of the WSFM. The WSFM is a thematic social forum of the broader structure of the World Social Forum. The WSFM was itself a space created as an antidote to the growing power of WTO; as WTO became clearly the dominant economic decision maker for econ policies, and where social movements / civil society had no voice. The WSFM became a place for social movements to get involved in agreeing on broad areas of consensus to bring about a better world, not just geared at profits. The first WSFM was held in Puerto Alegre, Brazil.
